Dear Insiders,
With the June holidays here, it's easy for parents to feel pressure to make them memorable.
Social media is full of overseas trips, packed itineraries and seemingly endless activities. But when I think back to my own childhood, the memories that stayed with me weren't necessarily the most exciting or expensive ones.
For years, our family holiday was a predictable drive up to Malaysia. Yet I looked forward to it every year.
I remember choosing snacks for the journey, sitting in traffic at the Causeway and singing a silly song I made up whenever we drove up to Genting Highlands. It became such a tradition that my parents would ask me to sing it every time. I also remember winding down the car windows and feeling the cool mountain air on my face — something that fascinated me as a child.
Those moments stayed with me.
Not because they were extraordinary. But because they were ours.
As parents, it's easy to assume children need bigger experiences, better holidays or more entertainment. Yet many of the memories we treasure most are surprisingly ordinary: a family tradition, a favourite snack, a shared joke or simply time spent together.
This June, if you're worried about not doing enough, remember that children don't need perfect holidays. More often than not, they just need present adults.
