Dear Insiders,
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how many people no longer use weekends to rest.
We use them to escape.
Some people pack their weekends with activities, brunches, staycations and endless plans because the work week feels emotionally draining. Others stay up scrolling late into the night even when they’re exhausted because it feels like the only time that truly belongs to them.
I see it in myself too.
Sometimes revenge bedtime procrastination isn’t really about poor sleep habits. It’s about trying to reclaim a sense of autonomy after spending the entire day responding to responsibilities, notifications, deadlines and other people’s needs.
And increasingly, I think many people are struggling with a deeper problem:
ordinary life no longer feels emotionally spacious enough to comfortably stay inside.
Even weekends have started feeling performative.
Some people aren’t resting anymore. They’re trying to make the weekend “worth it”. Trying to collect enough moments, stimulation or content to emotionally compensate for the week they just survived.
And social media quietly amplifies this pressure. Everywhere we look, people appear to be constantly travelling, dining out, attending events, reinventing themselves or maximising every moment of life. The result is that ordinary living starts to feel insufficient.
But a sustainable life cannot rely entirely on escape.
Not every weekend should feel like recovery from emotional depletion. Not every moment of joy needs to become content. Not every ordinary day should feel like something to simply “get through”.
This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot through the lens of Sustainable Ambition — the idea that success should not come at the expense of your wellbeing, identity or humanity.
Because perhaps the real goal isn’t to build a life that looks impressive online.
Perhaps it’s to build a life you can actually remain present inside consistently.
A life that still has room for:
rest without guilt
quiet without boredom
joy without performance
ordinary days that don’t feel emotionally unbearable

“Maybe the goal was never to escape life occasionally, but to build a life we can actually stay present inside.”
Until next time,
